Huang Jinhai, male, Han ethnicity, native to Quanzhou, Fujian Province. He graduated from the Chinese Department of East China Normal University in Shanghai and is fond of brush calligraphy. As an ancient saying goes: Flowers cannot thrive without butterflies; mountains cannot charm without springs; stones cannot grace without moss; waters cannot glow with algae; tall trees cannot feature vines; and a person cannot live without a personal devotion. Calligraphy is his lifelong passion. He studied under tutors Zhang Weidong and Zhou Hongtu. His works have been exhibited in South Korea, the United Nations, Australia, Austria, Hong Kong and other regions.

Shen Peng, Honorary Chairman of the Chinese Calligraphers Association, commented on Mr. Huang Jinhai’s works: Huang Jinhai’s calligraphy features neat ink traces, exquisite and forceful brushwork, dynamic artistic charm integrated within. He never chases fame and gains alongside contemporaries, but pursues artistic attainments equal to ancient masters. He devotes himself to revitalizing traditional Chinese calligraphy art.

Sun Xiaoyun, Chairman of the Chinese Calligraphers Association, remarked on his calligraphy: Huang Jinhai’s works show powerful strokes without bluntness, stretched structures without ostentation, and smooth flowing handwriting. He applies acquired calligraphy techniques into creation and boldly expresses personal temperament. Alternating large‑sized and small‑style characters, together with dense and sparse layout, form rhythmic layers and distinctive artistic atmosphere. His creative concept is praiseworthy.

Shao Dazhen, renowned historian and art critic, made the following comments: When appreciating Mr. Huang Jinhai’s calligraphy, one can feel its elegant style. Appreciating his calligraphy is just like tasting fine tea, with faint fragrance soothing the heart and lingering for long. His works are neat and refreshing, free of redundant strokes. Though lacking bold unrestrained momentum, the characters exude gentle grace, refined beauty and literati temperament. Literati spirit embodies integrity, elegance and gentlemanly bearing. As the saying goes, handwriting mirrors one’s personality. His calligraphy matches his mild and calm temperament. Viewers can perceive his modest and gentle disposition from his works, witnessing his sincere pursuit of calligraphy and tranquil state of creation. The character structures are open and spacious, loosely arranged with ample blank space between strokes, just like clear spring flowing freely, delivering serene charm and prominent literati flair. One’s temperament is shaped by life experience. The scholarly aura originates from knowledge and self‑cultivation. Having long engaged in calligraphy research, he has read numerous ancient classics and historical materials and produced plenty of fine works, which cultivates his unique scholarly grace.

The Organizing Committee of China Calligraphers Research Association evaluates his works: In calligraphy creation, Mr. Huang strives for inner peace, detachment and spiritual freedom. His calligraphy is elegant and implicit, free of deliberate carving, affectation, impetuosity and vulgar worldly style. Scholar‑style calligraphy attaches less importance to single line polishing, yet lays more stress on inner vitality and overall artistic expression. Obviously, Mr. Huang boasts solid calligraphy foundations. It is expected that he will learn widely from different masters, make persistent progress and contribute to the development of Chinese calligraphy culture.

He once co‑published Poetry, Calligraphy, Painting and Seal Carving together with former Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing, Master Fan Zeng and Master Han Tianheng. He collaborated with Quan Xijun and Su Shishu, former Chairman of Chinese Calligraphers Association, on Masterpieces of the Era. He compiled Brand Calligraphy jointly with Master Ouyang Zhongshi, and took part in the publication of Brush & Ink China · Art World by Master Huang Yongyu. He was invited to participate in creating the 10‑meter long scroll Dual Perfection of Painting and Calligraphy, prefaced by Fan Zeng, combining Huang Jinhai’s calligraphy with Along the River During the Qingming Festival.

Invited by postal authorities of China, Hong Kong and Macao, he published the global‑issued stamp album Chinese Dream · Sentiments for Hong Kong, Celebrating Hong Kong‑Macao Handover and Honoring National Security Legislation. With an inscription by Fan Zeng, he co‑produced the thread‑bound book Eight Famous Contemporary Chinese Painters & Calligraphers, Eulogizing the New Era, Leading Chinese Brush Art together with Shen Peng, Ouyang Zhongshi, Su Shishu, Fan Zeng, Feng Yuan, Fan Dean and Yang Xiaoming. At the invitation of China‑Japan postal departments, his stamp collection Cultural Ambassador of China, Distinguished Chinese Artists on Japanese Stamps has been released worldwide.
